Websites for trades · Perth & Lanark County

Search for a web designer in Perth, Ontario and Google hands you four results from Perth, Scotland.

I ran the searches. The first page mixes in Perth County near Stratford, Perth Road in Frontenac, and Perthshire. There is effectively no local incumbent here — the search results themselves are broken.

Who does exterior masonry repair in Perth that understands the heritage district rules?

[your business] comes up in local listings, but nothing on their site says whether they’ve worked inside the conservation district or handled a heritage permit. Here are three I can answer for:

First result4.8 ★ · heritage work documented
Second result4.6 ★ · permit process explained
Third result4.7 ★ · photos of past projects

01 — The situation in Perth

A stonemason town with rules about what you can do to the outside of a building.

Perth had 6,469 residents at the 2021 Census, up 9.1% from 2016, and it is the seat of Lanark County. It was founded as a military settlement in 1816 and built largely by Scottish stonemasons, which is why the downtown looks the way it does — and why the downtown is a designated Heritage Conservation District.

That designation is the single most commercially relevant fact about this market for a trade business. Work on the exterior of a building inside a conservation district runs through a heritage permit process. A contractor who understands that process, has done it before, and says so on their website is answering a question that homeowners inside the district are genuinely anxious about — and I cannot find anyone locally who does say so.

The wider county is a mix. Smiths Falls, at 9,254 residents, has had a volatile few decades — Hershey from 1963 to 2008, then Canopy Growth, which peaked above 750 jobs before closing its headquarters and laying off 800 in 2023, with Hershey buying the facility back. Carleton Place and Almonte sit closer to Ottawa’s commuter belt. Rural Lanark is wells and septic like everywhere else.

What makes this area different

Two things make Perth unusual. First, the heritage conservation district creates a well-defined, high-value, anxiety-driven service niche that nobody is writing for. Second, the search results for “web designer Perth Ontario” are so polluted by Perth County, Perth Road and Perthshire that there is no dominant local incumbent to displace. Those two facts together make this the cheapest market on my list to win.

02 — Who this is for

Trades with a heritage problem to solve.

A stone town with permit rules, a commuter belt to the north, and an unserviced rural county around it. The trades that win here are the ones that explain themselves.

One business per trade, per area. Two renovation contractors working inside the same heritage district can’t both come first in the same search. I’m not going to pretend otherwise. When your trade in Perth is taken, it’s taken — and I’ll tell you that rather than take the money.

03 — Why it matters now

The results page is broken here. That is an opportunity with a shelf life.

When a search engine cannot cleanly disambiguate a place name, the results degrade — and Perth, Ontario is a textbook case. The first page for local web design queries mixes in Perth County near Stratford, Perth Road village in Frontenac, and Perth in Scotland.

The way you fix that as a business is by being unambiguous in ways a machine can use: the full municipality name, the county, the postal code, the surrounding villages, the landmarks. Say “Perth, Lanark County, Ontario” and name Balderson and Maberly and the Tay Canal, and you have given the machine enough to place you correctly.

Most local businesses never do this, because it feels redundant to write down where you obviously are. It is not redundant to a system that has to choose between four places with the same name.

  • AI Overviews now appear on roughly 68% of local searches — so for most of the searches that matter to you, an assistant answers before anyone scrolls.
  • Ranking and being cited are different jobs. Ziptie’s analysis found 88% of Google AI Mode citations come from pages outside the organic top ten, and only 12% of AI-cited URLs also rank in Google’s top ten.
  • In a controlled test, AI assistants pulled facts from visible page text, not structured data — Claude extracted 0% from JSON-LD, Perplexity 12.5%, Google AI Mode 25%. If your price isn’t written on the page in words, it may as well not exist.
  • The peer-reviewed research (Aggarwal et al., ACM SIGKDD 2024) measured relative visibility gains of +40.9% for adding quotations, +30.6% for adding statistics and +27.5% for citing sources — a 30–40% band, in the paper’s own words. Keyword stuffing came in 8.3% below doing nothing at all.
  • About 45% of consumers now use an AI tool for local recommendations, and 82% read the AI-written review summary rather than the reviews.

04 — What you actually get

Built for how people in Perth actually search.

A heritage page, if you do that work — what the conservation district covers, what the permit process involves, what you have done inside it before, with photographs. This is the highest-value page you could own in this town and it is currently unowned.

Unambiguous geography throughout: Perth, Lanark County, Ontario, plus the villages you actually serve. It reads as slightly over-explained to a local. It reads as clear to a machine.

And the ordinary things done properly — prices in writing, licence numbers on the page, tap-to-call, and a Google Business Profile that is actually configured.

  • A heritage conservation district page, if that’s your work
  • Pages for Perth, Smiths Falls, Carleton Place and the villages you serve
  • Disambiguating geography written out in full, because four Perths compete for the name
  • Google Business Profile configured with the right categories and services
  • Automatic review requests after jobs
  • Prices published, since no agency or trade in this market does

05 — What it costs

06 — Questions people actually ask

Perth trades, answered plainly.

What is the Heritage Conservation District and why does it matter for my business?+

Downtown Perth is a designated Heritage Conservation District, a consequence of the town’s 1816 founding as a military settlement and the Scottish stonemason building tradition that followed.

For a trade business the practical effect is that exterior work inside the district goes through a heritage permit process. Homeowners inside that district are frequently uncertain about what they are allowed to do and who is competent to do it — and that uncertainty is a buying question nobody in this market is answering in writing.

If you have done permitted work inside the district, that is the single most valuable page on your website. I would build it first.

Why are there Scottish results on my local search?+

Because “Perth” is ambiguous and the query doesn’t give enough signal to resolve it. In what I ran, the first page for “web designer Perth Ontario” returned a BBB category page for Perth Road (a different place, in Frontenac), YellowPages for Perth County (near Stratford), an agency page for Carleton Place, and four results for Perth and Lanarkshire in Scotland.

The fix is disambiguation: write the county, the postal code, the neighbouring villages, and the landmarks into your pages. It feels excessive. It is what lets a machine place you.

Is there a local web design company I’d be leaving?+

For Perth specifically, not really — that is the point. The nearest agency with a genuine Eastern Ontario location-page network covers Ottawa, Napanee, Brockville, Belleville, Gananoque, Peterborough, Cobourg and Port Hope, and has nothing for Perth, Smiths Falls, Westport or Carleton Place.

If you already work with someone local and you’re happy, stay. I’d rather tell you that than take a client who didn’t need to move.

What does it cost?+

$79 a month with an $895 setup, $199 a month with setup waived on a six-to-twelve month term, or $349 a month. Buyout from $3,000, dropping $100 a month to a $500 floor. Live in 30 days or your first month is free, and a ninety-day refund window on the setup fee.

Do you work with businesses in Smiths Falls and Carleton Place too?+

Yes, and they get their own pages rather than a mention. Smiths Falls in particular has had a turbulent employment decade — Hershey, then Canopy Growth peaking above 750 jobs before the 2023 headquarters closure and 800 layoffs, then Hershey buying the facility back. A market like that has different anxieties than Perth does, and the copy should reflect it.

07 — Nearby

Other areas I work in

Each of these has its own page, because the same trade is a different business in each of them. What sells a job in Perth is not what sells one twenty minutes down the road, and a page that tries to cover both wins neither.

Next step

Nobody owns Perth. That is unusual and it won’t stay true.

If you do heritage-competent work in this town, there is a page waiting to be written that nobody has written. Tell me what you do and I’ll show you what I mean.
