That one fact shapes the entire trades market up here, and I have not found a single competing web design company whose content mentions it. Not one.

[your business] shows up in local listings, but with no website I can’t tell you what they charge, whether they handle your kind of tank, or how soon they could come out. Here are three I can answer for:

Twenty thousand people, 948 square kilometres, and no municipal sewer anywhere.
South Frontenac had 20,188 residents at the 2021 Census, spread across 948 square kilometres at about 21 people per square kilometre. The township estimates roughly 10,000 additional seasonal residents arrive in summer. Of 9,503 dwellings, only 7,937 were occupied year-round — the rest are cottages, and cottages call trades at very particular moments.
Frontenac County states it plainly: “There are currently no municipal services for water and sewer anywhere in Frontenac, with the exception of the water system in the village of Sydenham.” That is the County’s wording, and it covers water. On sewer, neither the County nor the Township publishes a municipal sanitary service for any community in Frontenac — so in practice every property in the township, Sydenham included, is on a private on-site sewage system. Worth confirming with the Township for your own service area rather than taking my word for it.
Between 60% and 70% of residents commute to Kingston. Rural subdivisions carry a two-acre minimum lot size precisely because everything is privately serviced. The township issues its own on-site sewage system permits, and as of 1 September 2023 stopped issuing them for the other three Frontenac townships. And the village sits on the boundary where the limestone of the St. Lawrence Lowlands gives way to the granite of the Canadian Shield — which is the difference between a straightforward excavation and an expensive one, and every good local contractor knows it.
What makes this area different
FOCA estimates that “25% of septic systems across the province are beyond their 30-year design life and are failing to protect ground and surface water.” In South Frontenac that isn’t a statistic, it’s a customer list. Yet the nearest agency with a real network of location pages covers Ottawa, Napanee, Brockville, Belleville and Gananoque — and has nothing for Sydenham, Verona, Harrowsmith, Inverary, Battersea or Perth Road.
02 — Who this is for
The trades this township actually runs on.
A market with no municipal servicing, two-acre lots, a seasonal population swing and a granite-to-limestone transition running through the middle of it needs different trades than a city does. These are the ones with real search demand here.
One business per trade, per area. Two septic contractors working the same lakes can’t both come first in the same search. I’m not going to pretend otherwise. When your trade in Sydenham & South Frontenac is taken, it’s taken — and I’ll tell you that rather than take the money.
03 — Why it matters now
Your customer is in a boat, or a truck, or somebody else’s cottage.
The person searching for you up here is frequently not from here. They own a place on Bobs Lake, they live in Ottawa or Toronto, and they are trying to solve a problem remotely on a phone. They cannot ask the neighbour, because they don’t know the neighbour.
So they ask an assistant. And the assistant will answer with whichever business has written down enough for it to be confident — which town you cover, what you charge, whether you work weekends, whether you handle their particular situation. Vagueness reads as risk.
This is also why one page for “Kingston and area” performs badly here. Somebody typing “septic pumping Verona” is not going to be well served by a page about Kingston, and neither Google nor an AI assistant is going to make that leap on your behalf.

- —Facts have to be in visible text. In a controlled test, Claude pulled 0% of its answers from structured data and Perplexity 12.5% — they read what’s written on the page.
- —The peer-reviewed research measured +40.9% for quotations, +30.6% for statistics and +27.5% for citing sources. Which is why this page has a sources list at the bottom.
- —Google’s own guidance is blunt about the alternative: “Don’t just recycle what others on the internet have already said.”

Sydenham & South Frontenac trades, answered plainly.
Is Sydenham really the only place in Frontenac with municipal water?+–
Yes. Frontenac County states it directly: there are no municipal water and sewer services anywhere in Frontenac except the water system in the village of Sydenham — and that system was required to be installed by the Ontario Ministry of the Environment rather than built voluntarily.
The County states the water half directly. On sewer it is quieter — but no municipal sanitary service is published for any Frontenac community, so in practice every property in the county, Sydenham included, is on a private on-site sewage system. If your work depends on it, confirm with the Township.
Does a septic contractor need a licence in Ontario?+–
Installers work under Part 8 of the Ontario Building Code. To install, you need a Building Code Identification Number — a BCIN — obtained through the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing’s QuARTS registry after passing the Part 8 exam administered by Humber College, and the firm itself must be registered in QuARTS as well.
Permitting authority varies. South Frontenac and Central Frontenac each issue their own; as of 1 September 2023 South Frontenac stopped issuing permits for North Frontenac, Central Frontenac and the Frontenac Islands. Elsewhere it may sit with a public health unit — only eleven Ontario health units still do this — or a conservation authority.

How much of my market is seasonal?+–
More than you probably account for. Of 9,503 dwellings in the township, only 7,937 were occupied at the 2021 Census — roughly one in six is seasonal. The township estimates about 10,000 additional residents arrive in summer, on top of a permanent population of 20,188.
The practical consequence is that a meaningful share of your customers are researching you from Ottawa or Toronto, in advance, on a phone, with no way to ask a neighbour who to call. That customer is decided almost entirely by what they can read.
Is South Frontenac actually growing?+–
Yes. The township projects roughly 25% population growth over 25 years and has created about 200 construction-ready lots plus eight subdivision parcels. Between 60% and 70% of residents commute to Kingston, which is what makes a rural township fifteen minutes from a city of 132,000 keep growing.
Further north the rate is sharper still — Frontenac County reports that development activity in Central and North Frontenac increased by 50% in each of the past three years.
Can you set my Google service area to cover everywhere I’ll drive?+–
Within limits, and the limits matter. Google’s guidance is that a service-area business should hide its street address and that the overall service area shouldn’t extend farther than about two hours’ driving time from where the business is based. Google’s guidelines also no longer permit listing whole provinces or countries — cities, postal codes or regions only. (Search Engine Roundtable dated that help-doc change to 25 June 2025; Google publishes no date on the page itself.)
Worth knowing: controlled testing suggests the service-area polygon itself doesn’t affect your ranking at all. Rankings key off the address you verified with. The polygon controls where you’re eligible to appear, not how well you place. Over-expanding it gains nothing and adds suspension risk.
